Government Nixes "Luxury Tax" for the Rich

At today’s government session, Prime Minister gave a ‘thumbs down’ to a draft bill proposed by independent MP Victor Dallakyan regarding the enacting of a “luxury tax”. (The Armenian version of the proposed tax is “shkeghutyun” which literally translates into – opulence).

The aim behind the proposed tax would be to collect a relatively larger amount from the richer segments of society for the state coffers. However, it was noted at today’s session that a progressive tax scale is already in place. While PM Sargsyan said the issue raised by MP Dalakyan is a valid one, a more just approach needed to be jointly worked out.
