Petition Drive Launched to Save "Student Garden"

A group of young environmental activists have scheduled a petition drive today to save a piece of green space called the "Student Garden" (formerly known as the Ghukasyan Garden) in downtown Yerevan. The petition drive will start today and continue till May 7, from 3-7pm, at the Tamanyan Statue at the foot of the Cascade. The group says that large-scale construction has begun recently in the garden that does not correspond to the surrounding area and that the green space is threatened with being destroyed. The activists are calling for a halt to the construction and for the garden to be returned to local residents. They argue that Yerevan cannot afford to lose any more park space as it is and that the interests of the average citizens must come before the personal profit of a few.
