OSCE Head, Minister, Discuss Nubarashen Toxic Dump

RA Minister of Nature Protection Aram Harutyunyan today met with OSCE Ambassador Dergei Kapinos. The two discussed the situation at the Nubarshen toxic waste dump and possible plans to resolve the critical issue that has been in the news of late. Minister Harutyunyan said the government had allocated 31.6 million AMD for immediate measures to be taken to rectify the situation, at least temporarily, until a permanent resolution is agreed upon. He reported that work was now underway to cover the entire site with a layer of soil.

Ambassador Kapinos said the OSCE was keen to assist Armenia in the project and noted the necessity of calling in international specialists to advise the most effective solution alternatives; whether to destroy the toxic wastes on site or transport them to a waste disposal plant overseas.
