Senior Coach of Armenian Weightlifting Team Dies
Ashot Mkhitaryan from Gyumri, the senior coach of the Armenian National Weightlifting team, died of a heart attack at Zvartnots International Airport on the night of 23 May, as he was waiting to greet the Armenian Youth Weightlifting team upon their return from Valensia. He was 51 years old.
He had been leading the Armenian National Weightlifting team since 2006, including the team’s achievement of three bronze medals at the Beijing Olympic Games. Under Ashot Mkhitaryan’s leadership, the Armenian teams had scored dozens of victories in World and European Championships as well as other major global tournaments.
