The environmental group Ecolur is calling for public hearings on the subject of constructing a new dump site for radioactive and other toxic substances. The government has started work on the construction of a toxic dump site in the area of the Zangakatun and Ourtsalanj villages in Ararat Marz but the group wants specifics as to what wastes will be stored there and where will the wastes come from. Ecolur also raises the question as to why public hearings were never organized in the area to assess the views of local residents and civil groups. In a statement released by Ecolur, the group states that only 600-700 meters separates the new toxic site from the village of Zangakatun. Residents have blocked the road leading into the village and have expelled workers from the site. They have met Regional Governor Vardges Hovakimyan and have expressed their opposition to the location of the toxic dump.
