Kapan Council Sides with Residents Opposing Uranium Mining

The Municipal Council of Kapan, a town in southern Armenia where uranium mining is planned, had issued a statement calling on the government to halt all exploratory work due to the vociferous opposition expressed by area residents. Noting the "dangerous consequences on human health and the environment" that such mining could have, the Council says that it agrees with popular opinion and urges the government to review its decision of 2008. The Council says that the negative effects of uranium mining in the area would lead to the exodus of people from the region on Armenia’s southern border.
