Conference Calls for Western Armenian Language School in Armenia

Over the past weekend, a gathering of Western Armenian teachers and linguists from the diaspora and Armenia gathered in the Armenian summer resort town of Tzaghkadzor to dicuss the present state of Western Arnenian langusgae instruction outside of Armenia. Many attendees called on Armenia to establish a school in the country where Western Armenian would be the language of instruction. They argued that to establish schools in other languages, a draft bill of which is now on the table, without a school in Western Armenian, would be inexcusable. The Minister of the Diaspora said she agreed in principle to the proposal. On July 2, RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan had a meeting with Western Armenian language experts of Armenia and the diaspora, as well as Western Armenian language teachers of the villages in Gegharkunik region who are currently undergoing teacher training. Discussing the issue of creating pan-Armenian language textbooks for daily and one-day schools for diaspora Armenian communities, Minister Hakobyan stated that one of the purposes of the pan-Armenian conference on the "State of Instruction of Western Armenian in the diaspora" is to hear the opinions of experts from all diaspora Armenian communities and create textbooks for diaspora Armenian children and youth taking the experience of textbook authors as a basis. Mrs. Hakobyan regretted to add that during her visit to Latin America, she noticed that all educators of Latin American Armenian communities used only one textbook and that most of those textbooks didn’t correspond to standards. Head of the Department of Armenian Language and Teaching Methods of the Faculty of Philology at Yerevan State University Ruben Sakapetoyan stated that language is an arbitrary phenomenon, a way of thinking and the sequence of teaching ramifications of language must be structured correctly when creating textbooks and training teachers. During the discussion, it was also mentioned that it is necessary to ensure a bachelor’s education in addition to preparing masters of diaspora studies.
