2,150th Anniversary of Tigran the Great; Lessons for Artsakh

This year marks the 2,150th anniversary of Tigran the Great and celebrations to mark the occasion started back on May 12 at Yerevan State University where a three-day conference was held. I later continued in Berlin, Aleppo, Leipzig, Hamburg, Paris and Marseille. Artak Movsisyan, a representative of the "Seround" pan-Armenian organization told reporters that it is unfortunate that the anniversary is not being celebrated on an official country-wide level. On August 11, the first day of the Armenian holiday "Navasard" according to the Armenian calendar, the organization, in conjunction with the NKR Ministry of Culture and Youth Affairs, organized a pilgrimage to the ruins of Tigranakerd in Artsakh. Mr. Movsisyan commented that Tigran the Great built seven cities bearing his name but that only one, that in Artsakh, is currently located under Armenian control. "The pilgrimage also wishes to direct attention to the fate of the liberated territories. When Tigran the Great found himself caught up in the complexities of world power politics he gave up certain conquered lands but not an inch of Armenian soil. We need to learn a lesson or two from this page of our history," said Mr. Movsisyan.
