No Water in Hayanist; Mayor to Petition the President
There is no water in the community of Hayanist, located in Ararat Marz. This is the warning issued by the NGO, Armenian Women for Health and a Healthy Environment. The problem is so serious that community Mayor Babken Sargsyan is drafting a letter to send to the president and prime minister.
Mayor Sargsyan says irrigation water from Geghanist never makes it to his community sinec the system is clogs and that water pumped from local artesian wells has been squandered by several residents who have erected fish raising tanks.
"It’s the 21th century, but we still face a problem with the drinking water. They don’t give us any. Rather, they tell us to collect money to repair the delivery pipe. But the amount is out of the question," resident Yeghishe Hakobadjanyan told Ecolour.
Rima Gabrielyan says, "We carry 600-700 litres of water a day for our needs. The water utility doesn’t care about our plight. All they say is that we should collect money for needed repairs, but the villagers just don’t have the cash. We have about 3,000 meters of land but can only plant about half since there is no water to irrigate it all."
