Who was behind demonstration against hydro-electric plant? In a further development to the story connected to the construction of a hydro-electric power plant on the Argitch River, Mayor Rubik Ghukasyan of the village of Verin Getashen has called on 15 residents to appear before the local prosecutor to provide testimony. No reason for the directive has been given, but local residents believe it is connected to the events of July 19 when townsfolk staged a demonstration against the planned hydr-electric station. On that day, residents blocked traffic on the Yerevan-Martuni highway for some four hours. The planned station would divert water from the Gayladzor tributary from five rural communities with a total population of some 30,000. As a result of their public demonstration, the Ministry of Nature Protection formed an inter-departmental committee that deemed construction of the station to be illegal. Questions remain as to what fines should be levied against the company in question, "Zangezour Eksimp" and how to dismantle the 2 kilometers of pipe that had been laid. Ecolur, an environmental NGO, reports that two weeks ago local police investigator Housik Baghdasaryan visited the local residents and asked who was behind the demonstration. Presently, Prosecutor Artur Manukyan is questioning local residents.
