On Saturday, Samvel Hovhannisyan will appear before the Kotayk Regional Police to relate what he saw taking place at the Symphony of Stones site in the Garni gorge. Mr. Hovhannisyan was among a group of Armenian and Polish cyclists who saw the natural site being pillaged out in the open. This leads one to conclude that the ongoing process of ripping stones from the cliff walls, or carting those that have fallen below, for use as construction material is being conducted by those with the tacit approval of higher government officials. For example, only one supervisor has been appointed by the Ministry of Nature Protection to patrol the entire area and prevent such plundering of one of Armenia’s natural wonders.
