GEF to Allocate $8 Million for Armenian Ecological Projects

CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Mrs. Monique Barbut has arrived in Armenia at the invitation of RA Minister of Nature Protection Aram Harutyunyan.
Mrs. Barbut stated at the meeting that the GEF will be allocating $7.97 million to Armenia as part of the GEF’s 2011-2015 Fifth Plan Cycle.
Armenia has been cooperating with the GEF since 1994 and has completed 17 projects worth $21.9 million over the years. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) unites 182 member governments — in partnership with international institutions, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector — to address global environmental issues.
Established in 1991, the GEF is today the largest funder of projects to improve the global environment. The GEF has allocated $8.8 billion, supplemented by more than $38.7 billion in co-financing, for more than 2,400 projects in more than 165 developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
