Minister of Culture Poghosyan – “Reporters are detestable…”

Reports about widspread museum thefts rattle minister Hetq has learnt that many items have gone missing from various national museums over the years. The problem has also been raised in reports issued by the National Statistical Service in Armenia. We went to Culture Minister Hasmik Poghosyan for some answers. "As yet, we haven’t published or findings on the matter. The report, which takes a look at fifteen museums, will be completed by year’s end. We have to inventory over 900 cultural items. I don’t know on what basis you can make such allegations," said the minister. She told us that under her watch there has only been one case of theft, at the Hrazdan Museum. We then told her that Hetq had published a complete list of missing items, including those being tracked down through Interpol, Minister Poghosyan replied that it wasn’t a matter of whether she believed the Interpol data or not. "Nevertheless, I can’t pass judgment on observations made by the press, which can be incorrect," she replied. Turning to a more personal matter, Minister Poghosyan said, "Reporters are detestable. Hey, that’s not something new. For the past 25 days, the press has been saying that I’m to be dismissed from my job. If you have no faith in me, then why should I reciprocate?" She then insisted that we turn over the documents in our possession proving widespread museum theft. "Bring me the Interpol documents so I can see for myself. Maybe you know something that I don’t. You have raised a serious issue. It’s not like saying that my hair is out of place or that I walk funny."
