Red Cross Oversees Return of Body of Armenian Citizen from Azerbaijan

Today, under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the body of Manvel Saribekyan, an Armenian citizen who died while in Azerbaijani custody, was repatriated to Armenia. During the same exchange, the Armenian side returned Azerbaijani citizen Eldar Tagiyev, who had illegally crossed Armenian-Azerbaijani border 10 months ago. The exchange took place along the Tavush border with Azerbaijan, on the stretch of road connecting the Armenian town of Ijevan with the Azerbaijani town of Ghazakh. "We keep in close contact with families on all sides whose relatives are detained, missing or have died, and we share their anxiety and sorrow. It is always very sad to have to bring bad news or repatriate a body," said Melany Vonrospach, an ICRC delegate in Yerevan who participated in the repatriation. Azerbaijan has claimed that Saribekyan was captured during a military infiltration operation and that he committed suicide on October 5, 2010. Armenia has strongly denied this allegation, claiming that Saribekyan crossed into Azerbaijani territory by accident and that he was physically abused while in detention.
