Kapan Residents Prefer Foreign Names for Their Babies

By Mary Soghomonyan Residents of the southern Armenian town of Kapan seem to prefer giving foreign names to their newly born. According to Melina Veziryan, head of the local Civil Acts Registry, the names Monica and Alex are the favorites in 2010. The tradition of naming children after their grandparents appears to be losing favor with new parents. 419 children have been born so far this year as opposed to 435 the same time last year. Marriages have also decreased. As of November 1, 2010, 155 marriages have been registered as compared to 183 last year. Divorces, however, have also gone down from 35 last year to 25 this year.
