Nayirit Chemical Plant Workers Demand 4 Months Back Pay

Presidential Chief of Staff reprimands Nayirit management A delegation of workers from the Nayirit chemical factory had a sit down meeting with Karen Karapetyan, Presidential Chief of Staff, protesting the fact that they haven’t been paid for the past four months. The delegation also conveyed the concerns of the workers regarding the possible loss of jobs given the uncertain future of the plant. Also present at the meeting was Nayirit Executive Director Vahan Melkonyan, who received a tongue lashing from Karapetyan for not resolving such issues in a timely fashion. Speaking to a group of workers after the meeting, Mr. Karapetyan stressed that since the government didn’t own the plant there was little it could legally do to intervene in its operation. He did say that President Sargsyan had directed his staff to meet with the Nayirit plant management in order to review the current situation and to pay one month’s salary to workers within the next ten days. Remaining wages would be paid within the next month, according to Mr. Karapetyan. He added that President Sargsyan will spare no effort to see the plant up and operating again.
