Greedy Fish Farms Threaten Vital Irrigation Water Flows

One can live without fish, but not without water Dr. Aramais Mirzakhanyan, based in Sweden and a supporter of the Sardarapat Movement in Armenia, says that greed has reached such extreme proportions in Armenian fish farming that local villagers are deprived of vital irrigation water. As a result, rural residents are leaving Armenian in droves. Fish farming in the Ararat valley has been in the news of late. The industry is digging more wells to tap the underground aquifers for the huge amounts of fresh water needed to sustain the increasing number of fish farms. As a result, there is growing concern that local farmers in Armenia’s most fertile of agricultural areas will be hard-pressed to irrigate their fields. Dr. Mirzakhanyan thus calls for a number of water saving measures to be immediately implemented. These include obliging fish farms to change over to automatic water valves from the present manual ones; to install water meters; to limit the number of new wells; and for the environmental movement in Armenia to follow developments on the issue.
