The Yerevan City Council today elected Karen Karapetyan the new mayor of Armenia’s capital by a vote of 50 to 1 in a secret ballot.
Mr. Karapetyan, the current Director General of ArmRosGazprom, a subsidiary of the Russian energy giant Gazprom, will thus replace Gagik Beglaryan, who resigned amidst a scandal in which he beat a member of the presidential protocol staff.
Mr. Karapetyan was born in 1963. On 2001, he was appointed Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Energy. He was appointed the head of ArmRosGazprom later that same year.
