Article 39 of the RA Constitution states that everyone has a right to an education. It’s another matter entirely if everyone has the financial means to exercise this right. My name is Lilit Sargsyan, a third year student at the French University in Armenia, and what follows is a plea for help. I risk being expelled from school since I can’t pay the tuition. I regard myself as an integral part of Armenia’s future. Our country has proclaimed itself to be a independent state dedicated to protecting the welfare and legal rights of its citizens. My parents do not work; they are disabled. My 15 year-old brother has been bed-ridden since birth; also suffering from a physical ailment. My sister also pays tuition for her schooling. Our family currently rents an apartment; we do not possess the assets to purchase a home. We receive financial aid and a pension. This allows us to cover our essential living expenses. My tuition for the 2010-1011 academic year amounts to 540,000 AMD. Despite the assistance of various NGO’s and a 25% tuition discount granted for academic excellence, I still face paying 400,000 AMD for my education. The French University has permitted me to take exams this month on condition that I pay all my second semester debt. I am a young Armenian woman, full of hope and ideas for the future. It is also my hope that I not be denied my dreams of receiving an education due to monetary problems. For isn’t it a fact that education opens doors for future growth and a normal livelihood to young people like me who are children of disadvantaged families. I am not looking for charity. I am not given to complaining or playing with the emotional heartstrings of others. All I ask is for your understanding and a bit of compassion in the name of my future, and, by extension, a brighter future for Armenia as well. I believe in that brighter future and know that there are many others out there who also have faith.
