Hnchak Party Issues Warning to Government Re: Agriculture

Armenia’s Social Democrat Hnchak Party has issued a public warning to the Armenian government – either implement immediate reforms in the rural agricultural sector or face the threat of widespread social unrest led by disgruntled and angry peasants. In its statement the Hnchak Party argues that the country’s agriculture has nosedived under the mismanagement and corrupt policies of President Serzh Sargsyan, thus leaving those who work the land at the “whim of fate”. The Party says that banks are out of the reach of rural farmers and that credit interest rates impel farmers to sell off their land to make the payments. The statement says that the 80,000 hectare reserve fund, envisaged for allocation to newly established families, has been almost completely sold off to oligarchs and bureaucrats from Yerevan. Thus, the Hnchak Party argues that government agencies are forcing the peasants to pay bribes to construct homes on those lands where the law prohibits residences. The Party says that the Land Law Charter of Armenia has been modified to allow such violations.
