Irate Drivers Protest at Bagratashen Border Crossing
Heritage Party MP’s report that early this morning a convoy of some 80 cars driven by RA citizens, but carrying Georgian license plates, converged on the Armenian town of Bagratashen at the Georgian border.
The drivers have been staging protests in northern Armenia to vent their anger a new Armenian customs laws that require them to pay hefty duties to drive their vehicles in Armenia.
MP’s Stepan Safaryan and Armen Martirosyan say that the drivers first staged a short rally in Noyemberyan and then made their way north to the Georgian border where they met with Bagratashen Customs Chief Karen Grigoryan and Gougark Marz Department of Customs Head Hovhannes Abovyan.
They drivers handed a four point list of demands to the officials who in turn said that Deputy PM Armen Gevorgyan had recently reviewed their grievances and that the government would take up the issue at tomorrow’s ministerial meeting.
Tomorrow, the irate car owners will converge on the Government Building in Yerevan to voice their concerns. The Heritage Party has stated its support of the drivers.
