Raffi Hovannisian – “We cannot go on like this for another 7 years”
Yesterday, in the National Assembly, Heritage Party Chair Raffi K. Hovannisian took the floor and made the following statement:
“The National Assembly’s agenda must reflect the domestic and external demands and legitimate expectations of Armenia’s citizens and the Armenian people. Unfortunately that is not the case, and today I speak not only about the continued presence there of the unacceptable Turkey-Armenia draft protocols or any other bill separately taken.
Recently, the incumbent president in his capacity as party chairman signed, together with the party leaders of his two coalition partners, an unconstitutional and illegal memorandum of unprecedented proportions. Its intent is not only to make the premature announcement of his future presidential candidacy - two whole years before the fact and in violation of all relevant laws - but also to convey a message to the Armenian public that “I am the State” (L’Etat c’est moi) and as such invincible. That foreign policy which consistently surrenders our state sovereignty and national interest shall go unabated through the upcoming seven years. That domestic policy which daily deepens the abyss of inequality, illegality, injustice, and emigration shall last for seven years at least.
And from our young visitors here today, tomorrow’s bearers of our statehood, we have nothing to hide.”
Hovannisian continued: “The objective picture of Parliament is a reflection of but one in a long series of distorted and falsified elections. But even this artificial disposition between majority and opposition has not satisfied the appetite of the party leaders, who through their memorandum have cast their eyes on these few seats in opposition.
There is no need to forge the next elections. As the Holy Liturgy says, “Take it and eat….This is your heritage.”
With these words the Heritage Party’s parliamentary faction left the plenary hall of the National Assembly.
At an emergency joint meeting later in the day, Heritage’s executive board and members of parliament echoed Raffi Hovannisian’s assessments as the order of the day and resolved as a matter of top priority to convene on March 6 a special session of the Party’s republic-wide Council. That body will be called upon to consider and decide the strategic and tactical courses for the party and its parliamentary delegation.
