GeoProMining Launches Illegal Construction at Sevan Basin
As a result of the concerns voiced by Hakob Sanasaryan, President of the Armenian Green Union, at the March 4 meeting of the Lake Sevan Investigative Committee regarding the factory being built at the Zod mine, President Sargsyan ordered the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources’ Mining Inspectorate to review the matter.
It turns out that GeoProMining, the company operating the mine, plans to install a crushing sorter on the site.
In a conversation with Hetq, Mr. Sanasaryan welcomed the approach taken by President Sargsyan to get a comprehensive picture of the matter before making any final decision.
The environmental activist said that GeoProMining would be installing the equipment not on land it owns but on a site leased from the Sotk community.
Mr. Sanasaryan told Hetq that he visited the construction site and was told by the chief engineer that work had started on February 15 and was scheduled for completion in mid-June.
Surprisingly, when the environmentalists asked to see the blueprints for the construction they were told that there weren’t any and that they would be ready on March 25.
Mr. Sanasaryan says that GeoProMining is going ahead with the construction without proper environmental impact reviews or official permission by the Sotk municipality; a clear violation of the "Law Regarding Lake Sevan".
