Former Armenian Prosecutor General: Systematic Corruption Long Since Eliminated in Prosecutor’s Office

During a coffee-break at a  press conference today in Yerevan regarding ways to combat the illegal drug trade in the region, former prosecutor general Aghvan Hovsepyan claimed that systematic corruption within the prosecutor’s office had long since been dealt with and no longer exists, when asked by reporters to comment on the current state of the office.

Hovsepyan resigned as prosecutor general in 2013 to become the head of the Investigative Committee of Armenia, a new super oversight agency created by President Serzh Sargsyan

“Back when I was the prosecutor general I noted and now note that the prosecutor’s office is one of those state bodies where manifestations of systematic corruption have long been eliminated,” Hovsepyan told reporters.

He said that he agreed with the popular adage that’ there isn’t a village that doesn’t have a dog’; a reference to the fact that all state bodies may have their share of bad apples.

“I am not that naive to claim that corruption has been totally eliminated and that it no longer exists. There is always the chance that there will be individuals capable of thievery,” Hovsepyan said.

The former prosecutor general avoided evaluating the work of the prosecutors’ office today and said that any appraisal would result from future collaboration between his agency and the prosecutor’s office.
