Yerevan Cops Detain Nine Supporters of Jailed Activist Shant Harutyunyan

Police detained nine people this evening in Yerevan who were marking the one year anniversary of the arrest of Shant Harutyunyan and others who staged a 'revolution of values' in the Liberty Square.

The nine, wearing Guy Fawkes masks and holding images of Harutyunyan, were taken into custody without any explanation by the police. (Fawkes became synonymous with the Gunpowder Plot, the failure of which has been commemorated in Britain since 5 November 1605)

On November 6, 2013, 38 activists were taken into custody by police. Last month Shant Harutyunyan was sentenced to six years imprisonment and his 15 year-old son Shahen received a four year sentence.

Ten others detained that day received sentences from 18 months to seven years.
