Syunik Governor Gears Up to Operate Voskedzor Gold Mine
Geghi Gold LLC has filed a preliminary environmental impact assessment filing with Armenia’s Ministry of the Environment regarding the Voskedzor mining complex.
The company, according to public information accessible in Armenia’s corporate registry, is 51% owned by Syunik Governor Sourik Khachatryan.
Geghi Gold began exploratory work at the site in 2013 and is now in the process of obtaining an operator’s license to extract gold and copper ore from the site located in the Geghi River basin in Syunik.
The town of Kapan, the provincial center of Syunik, gets 90% of its drinking water from the Geghi River basin.
The 30 page impact assessment states that the company intends to reprocess the ore at a plant to be built on site. Working blueprints for the plant and tailings dam will be drafted as construction on the mine itself is underway. Such work will take 3-4 years according to the impact assessment.
