Yerevan Protests: Sargsyan Elected Prime Minister, but People Control the Streets
Narek Aleksanyan
While Armenia’s National Assembly voted to elect Serzh Sargsyan as the country’s next prime minister, protesters continued to close off streets in downtown Yerevan and elsewhere.
People encircled various government buildings not allowing anyone to enter or exit.
Police detained scores of people who took to the streets in opposition to Sargsyan’s election as prime minister.
Police in riot gear used razor wire and armored vehicles to close off all roads leading to the National Assembly.
Anti-Serzh Sargsyan movement organizers, led by Nikol Pashinyan, have called for a mass rally in Republic Square.
