Opposition Leader Pashinyan Calls for Resumption of Peaceful Protests

After the cancellation of negotiations between acting prime minister Karen Karapetyan and opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan last night, Pashinyan called on people to continue protests and start gathering on Republic Square on Wednesday morning.

Pashinyan addressed  citizens this morning, saying that the ruling Republican Party of Armenia still wants to keep power and the people need to show their position.

As for Karen Karapetyan’s announcement yesterday about him calling on President Armen Sarkissian to organize a meeting at which all parliamentary and non-parliamentary political forces would attend to discuss the current situation in Armenia, Pashinyan says, it’s unacceptable to have snap parliamentary elections with a Republican Party of Armenia representative serving as prime minister, since it might be a repeaty of previous elections and if that happens, they might boycott those elections, blocking all electoral precincts.

Pashinyan repeated the next points on their agenda after Serzh Sargsyan’s resignation, about nominating a “people’s  candidate for prime minister and a caretaker government to be formed before holding snap parliamentary elections.

"We were able to achieve Serzh Sargsyan's resignation, and we will be able to keep Karen Karapetyan and the Republicans from their plans to seize the victory of the people," says Pashinyan.

Pashinyan called on to resume the massive civil disobedience activities at 11.00 and gather in Republic Square.

Note to Readers: On 23 April, after 11 days of protests against Serzh Sargsyan's election as prime minister, Sargsyan resigned. It was announced that Nikol Pashinyan would meet acting prime minister Karen Karapetyan on April 25 to discuss other items of the agenda proposed by Pashinyan, including the election of the prime minister by “people’s choice” and snap parliamentary elections.  However, later in the evening yesterday, the planned negotiations between Karapetyan and Pashinyan were cancelled due to disagreements over the aforementioned agenda.
