Yerevan Court Rejects Motion to Arrest Former Deputy Prime Minister

A Yerevan court today rejected a motion filed by the country’s Special Investigative Service to arrest former Deputy Prime Minister Armen Gevorgyan, charged with obstructing justice in the wake of Armenia’s disputed 2008 presidential election.

Gevorgyan stands accused of pressuring a member of the Armenia’s Constitutional Court to uphold the official election results that recognized Serzh Sargsyan as president.

Gevorgyan was chief of Robert Kocharyan’s staff during the final years of the latter’s ten-year presidential rule that came to an end in April 2008.
