New Working Group to Examine Amulsar Mine Project

Artur Grigoryan, the new head of the Ministry of Nature Protection’s Environmental Protection and Mining Inspectorate, writes that a working group has been created to inspect mining operations in Armenia and that its first task will be to examine the proposed Amulsar gold mine.

The mine site is located 170km south of Yerevan on the border between Vayots Dzor and Syunik provinces.

Grigoryan, in a Facebook page, writes that the working group will include community representatives, reporters, experts in the field, and civil society organizations.

Grigoryan writes that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan proposed that he create the working group.

The newly appointed inspectorate head will visit the communities of Jermouk and Gndevaz two days from now to hear what residents think of the Amulsar project.

Grigoryan says that mining operations must be evaluated based on fact and that there must be legal substantiation to shut them down.
