Prosperous Armenia Party to Boycott April 5 Constitutional Referendum

Claiming that the entire process has been illegal, the Prosperous Armenia Party says it will not participate in the constitutional referendum scheduled for April 5.

If passed, the referendum would allow for the early termination of Constitutional Court judges regarded as corrupt and supporters of the previous Serzh Sargsyan regime.

A meeting of the party’s political council was held today.

After the meeting, political council member Naira Zohrabyan told reporters that party head Gagik Tsarukyan had voiced his opposition to the referendum.

According to Zohrabyan, the party has always been in favor of direct democracy, but the problem is that the process has been illegally removed from parliament.

"It is obvious that from the very beginning of this process the authorities have shifted the issue from the legal sector to an exclusively political one, turning the issue into a devastating black-and-white conflict. However, the practice of creating divisions and barricades in our society has always been unacceptable for the Prosperous Armenia Party," Zohrabyan said.
