Armenia: Lusavor Hayastan Faction Wants to Criminalize the Slandering of Lawyers

The Armenian National Assembly's Lusavor Hayastan (Bright Armenia) faction wants to criminalize the slandering and insultung  of lawyers while they are engaged in their professional duties and has introduced a bill to amend the Criminal Code.

Under current law, any interference with the activities of a prosecutor or investigator to impede the comprehensive, full and impartial investigation of a case is punishable by a fine in the amount of 200 to 300 minimal salaries, or by imprisonment from one to three years.

Bright Armenia wants a similar law for cases of obstruction of a lawyer's professional activity.

Bill supporters argue that lawyers recently been the targets of slander, and that civil-legal liability alone is not an effective means of defending a lawyer's dignity and business reputation.

They say that criminal liability should exist as a preventive measure.
