Former Head of March 1, 2008 Special Investigative Group Arrested in Moscow

Vahagn Harutyunyan, who headed a Special Investigative Group looking into circumstances surrounding the death of ten during the March 2008 post-election protests in Yerevan, has been arrested in Moscow.

Harutyunyan, who faces charges of falsifying evidence and abusing his position when he headed the investigative group, had been on the run for the past eighteen months.

Armenia’s Special Investigative Service (SIS) says papers are being filed for his extradition.

Following the 2008 protests in Yerevan, Armenia’s Prosecutor General instructed the SIS to launch an investigation into the ten deaths.

Vahagn Harutyunyan was a senior SIS investigator when appointed to head the special group.
