Armenia: Pashinyan Says Coronavirus Lockdown Restrictions Might be Reinstated

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan cautioned that the government might reinstate lockdown measures in the country given the recent uptick in confirmed Covid-19 cases and the fact that people are not adhering to social distancing guidelines.

"Given the current economic and social situation in the country, and given that the coronavirus will continue to exist in our lives for a long time to come, we decided to gradually reduce the restrictions. All forms of economic activity have been opened. Those that haven’t been, will soon be opened. All this work will be effective if we move to a decentralized strategy to fight the coronavirus. This means that each of us must take responsibility for following certain rules,” Pashinyan said in a live Facebook post today.

The government lifted most restrictions on public movement on May 4. Public transport in the country is still under lockdown.

Pashinyan said the virus will be around for at least another year and that people must learn to live with it. He said that such coexistence means that certain restrictions must be adhered to.

"If we continue at this rate and the number of cases increases, we will have to revert to restrictions again, which is very undesirable for all of us. The goal of the restrictions will be to ensure that we do not suddenly have a situation where a citizen in need of medical care is goes without. I urge you to strictly follow the anti-epidemic rules,” Pashinyan said.

180 additional Covid-19 cases have been confirmed since yesterday, raising the total number to date in Armenia to 3,718.
