Pashinyan Says Opponents Have Launched a Disinformation Campaign to Discredit Him

As proof that there is an organized disinformation movement against him, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, at a special parliamentary session today, told MPs about a story of a woman who recently got into a Yerevan taxi, pulled out her phone and started a conversation while portraying herself as a staffer in Pashinyan’s office.

“And the woman, on the phone, says, ‘Has the prime minister’s watch arrived? What the price? 35,000? Is that dollars or euros?’” Pashinyan told the parliamentary deputies.

Pashinyan added that the taxi driver followed the woman and saw her getting into another cab, probably to perform the same scam.

“Isn’t it clear that this is an organized thing? Who’s behind it and what does our laws have to say about such issues? We need answers,” Pashinyan said.

The Armenian PM said he has called for the creation of a working group to investigate the sources of disinformation now being circulated regarding him and his government, especially regarding the government’s response to the coronavirus.

“I have given instructions to create a group to locate the sources of disinformation. Are foreign intelligence agencies involved? Is it the work of political or criminal circles who can pay to disseminate such disinformation?”  Pashinyan said.
