Armenia: National Assembly Passes Bill to Oust President of Constitutional Court

Armenia’s National Assembly today approved a bill that would oust Hrayr Tovmasyan as President of the Constitutional Court and would force all judges of the court who have served for more than twelve years to resign.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has repeatedly claimed that the country’s Constitutional Court is composed of supporters of the former regime and must be overhauled.

The bill was sponsored by the majority Im Kayl (My Step) parliamentary faction and all 88 MPs voted in favor.

MPs from the Prosperous Armenia and Bright Armenia factions abstained from voting at today’s special parliamentary session.

Three Constitutional Court judges (Hrant Nazaryan, Feliks Tokhyan, Alvina Gyulumyan) face dismissal if the bill is approved at the second reading scheduled for later today.
