Former Armenian President a No-Show at Embezzlement Trial; Told to Get Tested for Cornavirus

Serzh Sargsyan, Armenia’s third president charged with masterminding the embezzlement of 489 million drams (just over $1 million) in 2013 from a state-sponsored diesel fuel assistance program, has only appeared in court once since his trial got underway last winter.

That was at the trial’s opening session.

Sargysan failed to appear at today’s court session due a fever, this according to his defense lawyers.

His lawyer Amram Makinyan said that Sargsyan's health condition worsened yesterday and that physicians urged him to get tested for coronavirus.

Makinyan submitted a doctor's certificate to the court in this regard.

Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction Judge Vahe Misakyan said he hoped that   Sargsyan will appear in the next court session in good health and will clarify his absence at today’s session.

The next court session is scheduled for October 22.

There are four other defendants in the case: former Minister of Agriculture Sergo Karapetyan; Flash gasoline company owner Barsegh Beglaryan; former Deputy Minister of Agriculture Samvel Galstyan; and former Chief of Crop Management Department Gevorg Harutyunyan.
