Armenian MPs Target Pashinyan, Defense Minister for Military Failures

Armenian National Assembly MPs today focused on the November 9 ceasefire agreement, with opposition representatives calling for the resignation of the country’s prime minister.

MP Taguhi Tovmasyan, who has tendered her resignation from the ruling My Step (Im Kayl) faction, said that she immediately left for Artsakh upon hearing about the ceasefire in the press.

Tovmasyan said she wanted to understand what, if anything, in the agreement could be changed. She said she met with the military-political leadership of Artsakh, the president, the prime minister, and the Russian Ambassador to Armenia.

"Unfortunately, we have what we have. Vardenis, my birthplace, will be in the most dangerous zone. I could not remain silent. I have decided to leave the faction, Tovmasyan said.

My Step MP Hamazasp Danielyan said that he and his family had received insults and had become the target of physical revenge.

"I did not respond to them. It is not a sign of weakness. The imperative of the day is calm passions. I urge everyone to continue the exemplary behavior that we had during the war. The solidarity we had must continue," he said.

Danielyan called for an end to targeting people left and right in order to avoid clashes in Yerevan.

Andranik Kocharyan, Chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defense and Security, said that Armenian Minister of Defense David Tonoyan and high-ranking military officers must resign given their failures.

Kocharyan recalled David Tonoyan's slogan "New War - New Territories", claiming that only Azerbaijan benefitted from this thesis.

Kocharyan accused Tonoyan of not learning lessons from the April 2016 war.

Kocharyan said the Ministry of Defense made dubious military purchases, such as Su-30 combat fighters. He said that the ministry failed to purchase body armor and helmets and organize an effective national mobilization.

Kocharyan said that the report of the ad hoc commission of inquiry into the April 2016 “Four Day War” will be published soon and that some of its conclusions are relevant today.

Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) MP Shake Isayan said she agreed with Kocharyan’s remarks, adding that during a state of martial law the post of prime minister supersedes that of defense minister. She too called on Pashinyan to resign.

BHK MP Arman Abovyan stressed that in addition to the issue of responsibility, there is also a direct security issue to be addressed given the unfolding developments in the region.

"You have shown that you are not able to adequately assess the situation and respond. The war has come to the borders of Armenia. Shall we for them to enter Armenia?" Abovyan asked, addressing the ruling government.

He said that harmony in the country is impossible given that the government has taken responsibility for the military defeat. Abovyan said the government, from top to bottom, is incapable of addressing the existing dangers and must go.

My Step MP Gayaneh Abrahamyan, who has already announced her resignation from the party, said she feels guilty for what happened and cannot look into the eyes of soldiers and the parents of the war victims

"I will not be able to look into their eyes because I am guilty. Even if there were traitors on the battlefield, I am guilty as a part of the government. Even if the army has been robbed for years, I am also guilty as a part of the society that failed to resolve the matter in time. I will live under your accusing gaze,” she said, addressing servicemen and the families of those who suffered during the war.

Abrahamyan noted that she decided to leave the My Step faction even before the war had started, saying that there were disagreements over principles.
