Armenian Foreign Minister Says Shushi Is Armenian Cultural Center, Not Turkish

Armenian Foreign Minister Ara Ayvazyan today ridiculed recent reports by Azerbaijan that the Artsakh town of Shushi, now under its control, can be transformed into a Turkish cultural center.

“Shushi is an Armenian cultural center, regardless of who declares otherwise,” Ayvazyan said during a parliamentary Q&A today. “We will never agree with the claims that Shushi can be a Turkish cultural center. I am sure we will receive the support of the international community on the matter.”

Ayvazyan said that the Armenian side is ready to resume negotiations within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group on those provisions already agreed upon.

Ayvazyan did not specify what those provisions are.

"The primary issue for us is de-occupation and the safe return of the Armenian population to their homes. The uninterrupted provision of humanitarian assistance to Artsakh by the international community, as well as the preservation of cultural and religious heritage," Ayvazyan said.

He said that Armenia, via diplomatic channels, is showing the world that Azerbaijan is not ready for peace.
