Yerevan Court Rejects Motion to Detain One of Five Arrested at Anti-Pashinyan Protest
A Yerevan court today found that yesterday’s arrest of Vahagn Chakhalyan, one of the five individuals at an anti-Pashinyan outside the Government Building in Yerevan, was illegal and rejected a motion to detain him.
The five were charged with a “premediated attempt to occupy buildings, facilities, means of transportation or communication.” (Criminal Code Article 219)
Aragats Akhoyan, Arshak Zakaryan, Vahagn Chakhalyan, Tigran Chobanyan and Israel Hakobkokhyan, were the five arrested.
Chakhalyan, a Javakhk-Armenian politician, is the leader of the United Javakhk democratic bloc political movement. He was sentenced by a Georgian court in 2009 to ten years in prison for his political activities to protect the rights of Javakhk Armenians and was later released under an amnesty.
No decision has yet been made on the motions of the other defendants.
