Azerbaijan Accuses Armenian Forces of Firing Iskander Missiles on Shushi During Last Year’s War

Azerbaijan’s Demining Agency reports that it has found traces of two Iskander missiles that the Armenian military fired on in the Artsakh town of Shushi during last year’s war.

In a statement, the agency says it identified the missile fragments as belonging to the Iskander mobile short-range ballistic missile system. The statement also provides coordinates where the fragments were allegedly found.

Whether the Armenian military ever used the Iskander missiles during the war remains a controversial subject.

On November 18, 2020, Movses Hakobyan, the former head of the Military Control Service of the Armenian Ministry of Defense, announced that the Armenian Armed Forces had indeed used Iskanders, but he refused to say where.

In an interview with ArmNews TV on February 16, 2021, former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan accused the Pashinyan government of waiting too long to use the missiles. Sargsyan said Armenian forces only fired the missiles in the last days of the war, in the direction of Shushi.

In an interview with 1in.am on February 23, 2021, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that only 10% of the Iskander missiles purchased from Russia exploded upon impact.

Two days later, in response, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that no Iskander missiles were used during the war.

On March 1, Pashinyan spokesperson Maneh Gevorgyan told Armenpress that Pashinyan and Putin discussed the matter by phone.

Gevorgyan claimed that Pashinyan had not been properly informed on the missile issue.
