Russian Peacekeeper Commander Says Armenian Officials “Misleading Public” About Return of POWs

In the evening of April 8, freenews.am, the website belonging to the wife of the Vice Speaker of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan, reported that a plane transporting Armenian POWs from Baku to Yerevan's Erebuni Airport would arrive within the hour.

The news was published at 21:33. In a conversation with Factor.am, the Prime Minister's press secretary Maneh Gorgyan confirmed the information.

Reading the news, relatives of the POWs held in Baku had gathered outside the airport, hoping to see their relative among the returnees.

At 22:21, freenews.am reported that a Russian plane arrived in Yerevan from Baku, but there were no prisoners of war, and the information was confirmed by Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan's press secretary Nzhdeh Hovsepyan in a conversation with the website.

At 22:47 pm, Tigran Avinyan's office gave an official comment to Armenpress state news agency, informing that the return of the captives was postponed.

"Negotiations continue with the mediation of the Russian side, and we hope that the Azerbaijani side will eventually respect the signed statement and implement the humanitarian agreement, thus contributing to the establishment of stability in the region," the office reported.

Relatives of the POWS, who had gathered near the airport, moved to the administrative building of the Ministry of Defense, demanding a meeting with the Minister of Defense and the Chief of the General Staff.

Today, on April 9, rumors spread that there was in fact an Azerbaijani-Turkish delegation on the plane that arrived in Yerevan, which was to deal with the issue of unblocking transport links. However, this information was denied by Armenia’s Ministry of Defense.

Today, a hraparak.am correspondent caught up with Rustam Muradov, who commands Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno Karabakh, in the parking lot of the Radisson Blu Hotel in Yerevan.

When the correspondent asked why Armenian officials had announced the return of the POWs, Muradov replied that the officials were “misleading the population” and that the initial reports were “false provocations”.

Muradov, who was on the plane, said it was "an ordinary working visit".

Azerbaijan has repeatedly officially stated at the official level that it has returned all POWs, and those arrested after the war are not considered prisoners of war.

To date, 69 Armenian detainees have been returned from Azerbaijan.
