Armenian Security Service Official Says New Border with Azerbaijan "Remains Tense"

Deputy Director of Armenia’s National Security Service Stepan Melkonyan told reporters today in parliament that the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan remains tense.

"Obviously, we cannot say that the situation is calm and does not contain risks and challenges," he said.

Melkonyan pointed out that he wasn’t only referring to Armenia’s southern Syunik Province but also to the new 520 km long border formed after the November 9, 2020 Karabakh ceasefire agreement that mandated the withdrawal of Armenian forces from much of Artsakh.

The official said that Armenian and Azerbaijani troops are positioned along the entire length of the border that has yet to be finalized.

He said that the heads of the National Security Services of Armenia and Azerbaijan last met one month ago to discuss the returns of POWS, adding that the two sides communicate by telephone.

Melkonyan said that once the new border is demarcated, a neutral zone, comparable to what now exists on the Armenia-Turkey border, will be created.

While denying rumors about a “corridor” linking Nakhijevan with the rest of Azerbaijan via Meghri, he didn’t rule out the possibility of cargo railways.
