Armenia's New Parliament Convenes Amidst Calls for National Unity

The eighth convocation of Armenia’s National Assembly got underway today with MPs observing a minute of silence to commemorate those who dies during last year’s war in Karabakh.

Knyaz Hasanov, the oldest MP in the new parliament, officialy opened the session and called for unity and mutual respect.

Catholicos Garegein II then took the podium and reiterated Hasanov’s call for national harmony.

Hayastan (Armenia) Bloc MPs wore shirts showcasing photos of Syunik community leaders now facing criminal charges for organizing protests when Nikol Pashinyan made a swing through the southern province during the June parliamentary election campaign.

The shirts were emblazoned with the words “Free the Political Prisoners”.

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian then took the podium and called for MPs to unite around the vision of a strong, balanced, progressive state

"The time has come to have a state that responsibly fulfills its main functions, including the protection of borders and population, the preservation of sovereignty and the resolution of the Artsakh issue," he said.

The Civil Contract Party holds 71 seats in the new parliament, followed by the Hayastan Bloc – 29 and the I Have Honor Bloc - 7.
