Relatives of Soldiers Killed in Barracks Fire Dissatisfied with Official Inquiry

Relatives of the fifteen Armenian soldiers who died in a January 19 military barracks fire left a meeting yesterday with Deputy Prosecutor General Grigor Elizbaryan dissatisfied with the answers they received about the incident.

Arman Barseghyan, the father of Gagik Barseghyan, one of the soldiers who died, told reporters after the meeting that officials gave incomplete answers to their questions.

"We are very disappointed with the whole course of the case, both with the investigative work, with the work of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and with everything. “No, we can’t say we are fully satisfied with their answers today, said Barseghyan, adding he cannot speak in more detail since the preliminary investigation is ongoing.

Norayr Norikyan, the lawyer representing relatives of the fifteen soldiers, announced he will seek a second forensic examination given that the first raised more questions than answers.

Norikyan told reporters that contradicting statements regarding what happened on January 19 remain problematic and has increased the level of mistrust regarding the official investigation.
