South Caucasus Railway Employees on Strike

A group of South Caucasus Railway CJSC employees are on strike. They are demonstrating outside the company's head office, protesting the deduction of pension payments from their salaries.

South Caucasus Railway CJSC press officer Vahe Davtyan, in conversation with Hetq, said he wouldn't call it a strike, as the disgruntled employees are only one group of all their employees, who are asking for a meeting with the company's general manager. Asked whether the employees were informed beforehand that there would be additional deductions from last month's salary, Davtyan said he can't say at this time.

"The general manager will now meet with the employees; he'll make a decision, and after that I'll provide comments." In response to a question by Hetq, the press officer said around 40-50 employees from different departments are on strike. However, deductions were made from all employees' pay cheques, he added.

Operator Kristine Gevorgyan, in turn, informed Hetq that all employees are dissatisfied that mandatory pension payments were withheld from their salaries. Though she was working, Gevorgyan said she too is protesting. Asked why she hasn't joined her striking colleagues, she said, "The complaints are here; they're at work."

There has not yet been any response from the management, she added.
