Former Yerevan Mayor Returns to Armenia: Beglaryan Granted Bail in Kindergarten Seizure Case
Former Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglaryan, who fled Armenia last year after the National Security Service issued a warrant for his arrest for his involvement in a scheme to seize a Yerevan kindergarten in 2009 worth 233.5 million drams, arrived in Armenia on a Moscow-Yerevan flight on May 17 and turned himself in to law authorities.
Arevik Khachatryan, who heads the Public Relations Department at the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO), told Hetq that Beglaryan has been granted 50 million drams ($96,000) bail after he deposited a sum equaling the sum of the damage in the PGO’s account.
Beglaryan, who served as mayor from June 2009 to December 2010, resigned after allegations that he attacked a presidential aide over a seat at a Placido Domingo concert.
In June 2012, Beglaryan was appointed Minister of Transport and Communication.
