Armenia: Prosecutor General's Office to Investigate Discrepancy in Covid-19 Death Numbers

Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan, at a government cabinet session today, said that no one in Armenia has yet been diagnosed with the new omicron coronavirus variant.

Pashinyan said more than 480,000 individuals have received two doses coronavirus vaccine doses and that 20,000 people are being vaccinated daily.

Minster of Health Anahit Avanesyan, referring to the discrepancy between the numbers of those who have died from the virus published by the Statistical Committee and the Ministry of Health, said that the matter is under investigation and the findings will be made available.

On November 19, the Statistical Committee reported that 6,366 people died from the virus in all of 2020 and January-September 2021 combined, and the Ministry of Health put the number at 5,339.

Avanesyan repeated her earlier claim that some data may have been omitted during the stage-by-stage transition to the ArMed electronic health system in Armenia.

The minister said that, at first glance, the discrepancy isn’t the result of government agencies intentionally juggling the numbers and more likely technical in nature.

Avanesyan said such administrative gaps in the system must be addressed.

She said that once the government concludes its investigation, the Prosecutor General’s Office will launch its own inquiry.
