Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan Resigns; Tells Citizens Not to Worry

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has resigned.

Pashinyan, in a live Public TV broadcast on October 16, said that the aim of his resignation was to launch snap parliamentary elections and thus bring the “Velvet Revolution” to its logical conclusion.

“The aim of this resignation, however, isn’t for me to escape the obligations of the post that I made to you. On the contrary, it’s to bring the non-violent, velvet, democratic revolution that we achieved together to its conclusion via holding snap parliamentary elections and by returning all power to the people,” Pashinyan declared.

Pashinyan laid out a roadmap for the elections, noting that after the president accepts the government’s resignation the National Assembly would fail to elect a new prime minister, thus leading to the dissolution of the parliament.

While the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) has agreed not to nominate its own candidate or support any candidate for the post of prime minister, and while the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) has said it has no intention to nominate a candidate, Pashinyan brushed aside reporters’ questions as to what might happen if these parties reneged on their promises.

Pashinyan merely stated that he was certain that nothing of the sort would happen because the other parties now in the parliament had shown that they weren’t ready to cross the “red line” when it comes to the stability and security of the state.

“I believe that they will never cross that line, especially since they have declared that they will not nominate candidates of their own,” Pashinyan said.

“In Armenia, I have never had or will have enemies amongst Armenians,” Pashinyan said, reassuring the people that all “will be very, very, good.”

“Get ready for new victories and the building of a new, strong and happy Armenia,” Pashinyan declared to his TV audience.
