Armenia has petitioned the European Court of Human Rights following today’s arrest of former Artsakh State Minister Ruben Vardanyan by Azerbaijan border guards.
Power, accompanied by U.S. Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasian Affairs Yuri Kim, traveled to the Armenian-Azerbaijani border to witness the plight of thousands of Armenians fleeing Karabakh.
Ruben Vardanyan took the position of Minister of State of Nagorno-Karabakh-Karabakh in 2022 and served in this position from November to February of 2023.
“Vardanyan was handed over to the relevant state bodies to make a decision regarding the detainee,” according to Azerbaijani media reports.
"We also extend our sincere condolences to the families of those killed and injured during last week's hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh."
U.S. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, during a September 26 press briefing, said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has promised to cease further military action in Karabakh.
